Fiber 101

The Fiber 101 program can be used as a prep course or as a renewal program! This program reviews the basic principles of fiber optics and can help prep students for their CFOS/D and CFOT programs and exams. The hours from this program can also be used to renew current IMSA/FOA Certified Fiber Optics Technician certifications.

Description

This program is meant to help students in varying situations...

  • It can be used by students who need to renew their current IMSA/FOA Certified Fiber Optics Technician.
  • It is beneficial for students who don’t have their CFOT or perhaps would just like a quick refresher on the basics of Fiber Optic Cable handling, splicing and testing for an upcoming program.
  • It is particularly helpful for students enrolled in the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) and Certified Fiber Optics Design - Specialist (CFOS/D) programs because the basic principles discussed in the program are the foundation for those programs and their exams.

Topics reviewed during the Fiber 101 program include:

  • Types of Fiber Optic communication
  • Overview of Fiber Optic terminology
  • How data is transmitted over fiber
  • Types of fiber optic cable and their uses
  • Differences between inside plant and outside plant fiber optic installations
  • Basic fiber optic cable installation methods
  • Handling and stripping fiber optic cable
  • Splicing and terminating cables
  • Testing cable, components, and networks
